Board of Directors Minutes
Treasurer's Report

Minutes of the Alpaca Research Foundation Meeting

February 19, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 9:10pm EST.  Present were Karen Baum, Patricia Craven, Allan Dewald, Michelle Ing, Randy Larson, Pat Long, Abe Rosenbloom  and Lisa Williamson.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Abe explained how he gets final reports on projects and getting that information onto the ARF website.  Patricia makes sure the summary of the report gets onto our website.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The minutes were discussed from January.  Allan proposed that the minutes be approved as revised.  Pat seconded. The motion passed unanimously.  Karen Baum volunteered to be secretary for 2007.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The annual appeal has resulted in continued donations.  AOA sale animal payments are coming in each month.  The credit card account is functioning well, offering interested parties an easy way to make donations online.  Allan moved and Patricia seconded the motion to approve the Treasurer’s report. The motion passed unanimously.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT

Patricia reported that the banners are finished.  The abstracts are on the website for Tibary and Lakritz for their presentations at AOBA National Conference.  The stud raffle information, as well as links to the respective farms, is on the ARF website.  Tickets will be allowed to be purchased online by credit card ahead of time.  You do not have to be in attendance at the drawing during the AOBA National Conference to win.  Alpaca Nation has asked ARF for articles, as has Alpacas Magazine.  The next development committee meeting will be Wednesday.

MAF UPDATE

Allan reported on which preproposals were asked for full proposals.  There are three MAF trustee meetings per year.  Warren Johnson has a final report on his genome project.  This has resulted in an array of information which has and will assist other research projects.

LMRG UPDATE    No report.

The annual ARF Lecture at AOBA Annual Conference will be given by Dr. Ahmed Tibary on new information on alpaca reproduction.  The date is being selected.  There was discussion about who would make the presentation of the manikin (or would it be an alpacakin?) to be used for teaching veterinarians and veterinary students how to take blood samples and place intravenous catheters.  Pat made the motion that ARF allocate $300 so that Dr. Whitehead and/or Dr. Lakritz can explain and demonstrate the model at the AOBA National Conference.  Randy seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

Pat discussed private vs. public foundation.  990pf form is required for a private foundation whereas a 990 form is required for a public foundation for the IRS.  Joe Addney is our accountant who is working with the IRS.

Randy reported 21 of 30 laboratories contacted gave results on BVD testing in alpacas.  This number included 29 diagnostic labs accredited by AAVLD, and one private lab doing considerable alpaca diagnostic testing.  The results of PCR or VI tests on 25,378 samples in 2006 demonstrated 66 positive, showing 0.26 % positive.  Most were routine tests for showing and transporting.  The total also included diagnostic tests on potential cases.  5 labs ran no BVD tests on alpacas.  4 labs were unwilling to share results.  5 other labs were contacted but did not respond to numerous calls.  Positive results, indicating active cases of BVD came from labs across the US but origin, age and epidemiological information were not available on positive cases.  We do not know how many animals are represented by the positive samples, as positive individuals are likely to be retested.

Pat discussed problems encountered by one person downloading printable forms from the ARF website.

The annual report should include copies of the minutes and the treasurer’s reports, as well as grants funded and a list of members.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 19, 2007 at 9:00pm EST.

With no further new or old business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:45pm EST.  Motion was by Allan and seconded by Pat.

Respectfully submitted,
Karen Baum
Secretary for ARF
