Summary of Discovery of Microsatellites in Alpacas
9/01/05 - 8/31/07
ARF Contribution $4,000

A comprehensive genetic map of the alpaca genome would allow the precise mapping of desirous or deleterious traits within a family and can ultimately result in the discovery of genes responsible for these traits.  A medium density map of the alpaca is nearing completion.  However, the more markers that can be placed upon this alpaca map, the better the coverage of the genome will be and thereby the chances of identifying disease markers will be substantially increased.  The purpose of this study is to identify and characterize between 100 and 200 additional tetranucleotide microsatellite markers for the purpose of their inclusion onto the alpaca radiation hybrid map.
